Your Guide For Traveling Near and Far

What To Pack For Your River Rafting Adventure

by Lloyd Pearson

A river rafting trip in Moab can be a fun and exciting experience, but you'll want to make sure you bring everything you need with you on your journey. Here is a guide to help you pack the perfect bag for your Utah rafting adventure.

Weather-Appropriate Clothes

Moab, Utah sees its fair share of warm weather in the summer, but it can also experience crisp, cool spring and fall seasons. Making sure you have clothes that are appropriate for the weather is the best way to stay comfortable during your trip. Avoid 100 percent cotton clothing while you are on the river, as it can leave you cold if it gets wet. Pack a bathing suit as your bottom layer no matter what the weather conditions may be, and pack waterproof and windproof jackets and pants to keep you warm on cool days. Water shoes or booties will keep your feet and your raft safe during the trip. Be sure to keep a spare set of clothes in your bag for when you get out of the raft so you can stay dry and comfortable at night, and pack a plastic bag to keep wet clothes in during the trip.

Personal Safety Gear

No matter what time of year you go rafting, you'll be at risk for sun and wind damage to your skin. Pack sunscreen, lip balm and lotion to keep your skin protected and moisturized. A refillable water bottle will help you stay hydrated during your trip without leaving behind garbage at your campsite. You should also consider keeping a small bag of trail mix or energy snacks with you at all times just in case you get separated from the group. A small first aid kit is a smart addition to your backpack during the rafting trip and while at the campsite. Pack any prescription medications you take in a water-tight bag. If you take your medications in the morning and at night, the rafting company may be able to deliver your medications to the campsite. This will reduce the chance of the medications getting wet in the raft.

Hygiene Items

While you are camping, you'll want to have access to personal hygiene items. Choose small, travel-sized packages to save space in your gear bag. Be sure to bring a toothbrush/toothpaste, soap, washcloth, hand towel, bath towel and unscented deodorant. Avoid bringing hair products or perfumes that might attract unwanted visitors to your campsite.

Be sure to pack a waterproof camera so you can record some of the adventures on the river. If you are unsure about any other items you might need to bring with you, check with your rafting trip company to see if it offers a list of items that will be provided for your trip. You may find that water, snacks and other small essentials are offered as part of your tour package.
